The German V-2 Rocket Story

The V-2 Rocket, which was one of the first weapons of mass destruction is also the rocket that started America’s space program. Its story began in post-World War I Germany.

During this interwar period, the German army took an active interest in rocket technology for several reasons.  First, storage technology for solid rocket propellants had been improved, making rockets more feasible.  Second, rockets filled a critical loophole in the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty made no mention of rockets which allowed the German army to prepare for rearmament without violating the treaty.
